Infinite Dance Swirling in a Figure

Lions, Horses, the fictional character—the Hulk and mythological goddesses are representative creatures who have dynamic movements and transcendental power. Thus, they often appear as an artistic motif symbolizing what human beings’ desire to be with and admire. Their sense of mobility and vitality generates an impression that those huge figures would soon fly up into the sky and begin to dance. Repeating flowing in and out of a certain form, the copper wires sophisticatedly bent and twisted by Sung Hoon Kang draw grand lines in the air and eventually remain as a figurative colony of energy. 

Kang instantly captures the aura of targets possessing kinetic aspects and he manifests it in lines. In this context, his practice seems to stand somewhere between Constantin Brâncuși who simplified and condensed energy of a moment and Bernar Venet who has produced three-dimensional drawings of steel.

Kang’s sculptures intensely explore the physical features of animals and humans. The delicately-crafted bodies consist of flows of shapes intangible yet still possible to conjure up. According to what Kang has mentioned, his works are the outcome of an investigation into finding a way to connect typical figurative sculptures with ‘primitive energy’ of living existences. He has constantly emphasized the stream of the invisible force. This indicates that establishing a sculpture for him is a process of representing the unseeable abstraction. Hence, Kang’s sculptures can be understood as ‘sculptures without an original source’ and the most recommended approach of appreciating them is imagining the overall ambience and narrative they convey instead of focusing on the techniques and modes of expression. 

What the audience fundamentally seeks from art is the artists’ ability to deliver implications by interpreting common perceptions from a different angle. Kang has maintained his methodology within the realm of sculpture however he has managed to portray the invisible territory in an actual space rather than merely shaping the targets; in order to satisfy what we expect from art, he pulls our comprehension into a deeper dimension.

  사자와 말, 그리고 상상 속 인물인 헐크와 신화 속 여신들은 역동적인 움직임과 초인적 힘을 가진 무리이다. 이들은 인간이 가장 곁에 두고 싶어 하고, 또 동경하는 대상들로 작가의 주된 작업 소재로 등장한다. 운동감과 생명감이 큰 이 형상들은 날아올라 곧 춤을 추기 시작할 것만 같다. 작가가 구부리고 뒤튼 동선(copper wire)은 형체 속에서 흘러 들어갔다 또 흘러나오기를 반복하며 공중에 거대한 선을 그려내다 기운만 담은 형상 덩어리로 남는다.

작가는 동세를 가진 대상의 기운을 순간 포착하고, 그것을 ‘선’으로 표현한다. 그래서 그의 조각은 찰나의 에너지를 응집하고 단순화시킨 ‘콘스탄틴 브랑쿠시(Constantin Brâncuși)’의 작품과 철로 공간 드로잉을 하는 ‘베르나르 브네(Bernar Venet)’의 작업 어딘가에 있는 듯하다.

그의 작품은 동물과 인간의 몸체에 집중되어 있다. 이 몸체는 실제는 없고, 상상할 수 있는 형체의 흐름으로 구성되어 있다. 작가의 말에 의하면, 이러한 작업은 살아있는 존재들이 가진 ‘원초적인 에너지’를 전통적 구상 조각과 만나는 방법을 찾다 보니 얻어진 결과라는 것이다. 작가는 되풀이해서 보이지 않는 기운의 흐름에 대해 언급한다. 그에게 있어 조각이란 것은 눈에 보이지 않는 추상을 구상화시키는 과정인 것이다. 따라서 그의 조각은 ‘원본이 없는 조각’ 이라 할 수 있으며, 가장 좋은 작품 감상법은 기교나 표현을 보기 전에 전체가 전해주는 분위기와 이야기를 관람자가 상상해보는 것이다.

우리가 예술에서 얻고자 함은 같은 것으로 보고, 다르게 뱉어내는 작가의 암시력이다. 그의 작업은 조각이라는 영역에 입각하면서도, 동시에 단순히 대상을 재현하는 것이 아니라 보이지 않는 영역까지 공간에 그려내 보이며, 감각의 영역을 깊은 곳까지 끌고 내려가 주어 우리가 원하는 예술을 구현해 준다.
